Waters of LIFE Project
Galway Rural Development will be among the key stakeholders for an environmental project along sections of the River Suck over the coming five years. The aim of the ‘Waters of LIFE’ project is to maintain the standard of country’s most pristine rivers, and to reverse any deterioration as part of the wider River Basin Management Plan.
This project will work with state agencies, landowners, stakeholders, and local communities in six pilot catchments nationally and the River Suck will be one of those. The project focuses on high-status water bodies, like the Suck, and will support the work of the Blue Dot catchments programme.
With the help of the Community Water Officers and VERI, GRD recently provided Water Biodiversity training through LEADER which targeted communities along the county's main rivers. Over the coming years, the supervisors and participants on our Rural Social Scheme and TÚS Scheme will be playing a key role on the project.

The LIFE programme behind this project is the central EU funding instrument for environment and climate action. The objective is to contribute to the implementation of wider EU environmental policy, and this project will help maintain the Island River’s standards for the people of East Galway and help maintain its remarkable biodiversity.
