Galway win at National Community and Council Awards
The ‘Healthy Islands’ initiative, a partnership led by Galway Rural Development’s Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) team and Healthy County Galway in Galway County Council, won the Best Community Health Award at the All-Ireland Community and Council Awards.
The collaboration between service providers and organisations working on the Islands, including the hard-working Island co-ops, represented a terrific mix of expertise, resources, and a shared passion for creating thriving, age-friendly communities. Through Healthy Islands, we believe we can continue to create a lasting positive impact.
The winning initiative provided information on the supports and services that are available to Island communities in order to recognise and develop healthier lifestyles. The efforts created opportunities for good health and for people to actively participate in, and contribute to, community life.
Expressing gratitude for the award, and acknowledging the importance of the partnerships, SICAP Team Leader Dr Anne Cassidy said she was thrilled with the recognition “This award is a testament to our commitment with Healthy Galway and all our partners to build inclusive and supportive environments for our island communities”
Chairperson of GRD Cllr Pete Roche praised the SICAP team for the partnership approach which amplified the impact of the ‘Healthy Islands’ initiative.”It’s a proud day for all of us at GRD” said Cllr Roche ” Important information and access to services face additional challenges due to the rural nature of these communities”.
The SICAP programme is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union.
